Oklahoma State Game Notes
The Basics
Oklahoma State's 15-game non-conference home win streak ranks 20th nationally, and the Cowboys will put in on the line against the nation's No. 6 team, Wichita State, on Saturday afternoon. The Cowboys feature one of the nation's deepest and most efficient lineups and rank 23rd nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio. The battle-tested Shockers lead the nation in rebounding margin and rank 10th in assists per game.
On the Air
The matchup between the Cowboys and Shockers will air on ESPN2 at 3 p.m. Central. The play-by-play team of Mark Neely and Mark Adams will handle the on-air duties. ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app will carry the webcast. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call.
Boynton Era Off To A Solid Start
OSU is off to a 7-1 start to begin the 2017-18 season and the Mike Boynton era, which tied Eddie Sutton (1990-91) for the second-best record after eight games by a new coach in program history. The only first-year coach to go undefeated in his first eight games was Sean Sutton in 2006-07, who went on to win his first 11 games that year. Should the Cowboys beat Wichita State, Boynton would own the second-best nine-game start in Oklahoma State history behind only Sean Sutton.
Cowboy Quick Hitters
• Jeffrey Carroll is only 18 points away from becoming the 41st player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. The senior has scored 982 career points and has 16 career 20-point performances.
• Mitchell Solomon has hit 15 straight shots over the last four games. Solomon last missed from the floor against Pittsburgh back on Nov. 21, and is shooting 61.0 percent from the floor, which ranks 8th in the Big 12.
• Sophomore sharpshooter Thomas Dziagwa is 24-of-48 (.500) from 3-point, which ranks third in the Big 12. Dziagwa is now 47-of-101 (.465) from 3-point over his career, and will qualify for the OSU career 3-point percentage record with his 50th make. The current record holder is Sean Sutton, who connected on 44.4 percent of his 3-pointers from 1990-92.
• Brandon Averette is one of the country's most efficient point guards, and ranks 12th in the country with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.43.
• OSU is tops in the Big 12 and 14th nationally in free throw shooting at 78.5 percent.
The Series With Wichita State
Only 125 miles separate the Oklahoma State and Wichita State campuses, which has made for a regional rivalry dating back to 1934. The Cowboys hold a 30-8 edge in the overall series, including a 15-2 mark in Stillwater. OSU has won the last three games against the Shockers overall, and the last four in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Last season, Oklahoma State blistered the INTRUST Bank Arena nets for a 93-76 victory in Wichita.
Old Missouri Valley Ties
Oklahoma State, known then as Oklahoma A&M, and Wichita State shared a Missouri Valley Conference rivalry from 1945 (when WSU joined the league) until 1957 (when OSU left for the Big Eight). During that span, A&M emerged as a national power under Mr. Henry Iba - winning NCAA titles in 1945 and 1946 - and was 19-5 against the Shockers.
Shocker On The Cowboy Bench
Oklahoma State assistant coach John Cooper was a standout player for Wichita State, and even led the Shockers to a 72-69 victory over OSU as a senior in 1990-91. The 6-6 forward from Kansas City still ranks 30th in program history with 1,153 career points, and was a second-team All-Missouri Valley Conference and MVC All-Defensive team selection.
OSU Against Ranked Opponents
• In the history of the AP poll (1948-49), an unranked OSU team has upset an opponent ranked No. 6 or higher 14 times, with 11 of those upsets coming in GIA. The last major upset by the Cowboys came on Jan. 19, 2016 when an unranked OSU squad took down No. 3 Kansas, 86-67, in GIA.
• OSU is 116-238 all-time against AP ranked opponents, including a 49-119 mark against top-10 teams. The Cowboys are 3-9 all-time against teams ranked No. 6 in the AP poll.
• The Cowboys are 2-1 all-time against ranked Wichita State teams. OSU defeated the Shockers when they were ranked No. 14 (1954) and No. 17 (1958). Both of those games were in Wichita.
