Track and Field Wraps Up Razorback Invitational
January 28, 2017 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
RESULTS
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Razorback Invitational wrapped up Saturday with the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Cowgirls both finishing 10th in the team competition.
OSU saw another school record fall Saturday in Fayetteville, Arkansas, when true freshman Kira White crossed the line in 7.54 seconds in the 60-meter dash. She ran in the last heat of the day and finished fifth among some of the fastest women in the NCAA.
The time was more than a tenth of-a-second better than her previous best that she set only two weeks ago at the Holiday Inn Invitational.
It was the third Cowgirl record broken at "The Fastest Track in the World" in the past two seasons.
The Pokes took second and third in the men's 3,000-meter invitational when cross country All-Americans Josh Thompson finished the 15-lap race in 8:04.94 and Craig Nowak crossed the line in 8:05.87.
"We had a few bright spots this weekend with some freshmen in the 3K," men's middle distance coach Bobby Lockhart said. "Craig and Josh were aiming for a national qualifier, but the pace just wasn't quite there, but they still ran pretty solid times."
Matthew Fayers was on rabbit duty and led the field through the first 1,600 meters before handing the lead to Mississippi's MJ Erb. Thompson held in the top-three for the entire race and grabbed the top-spot in the Big 12 with his time. Nowak sat in eighth after the first mile, but slowly picked off the field on his way to the third-place finish and the second-best time in the conference.
The women's 3,000-meter invitational featured Molly Sughroue and Big 12 Cross Country Freshman of the Year Michelle Magnani. Sughroue's 9:31.20 was the fastest time by a Cowgirl in the event this year and good enough for fifth. Magnani secured an eighth-place finish in a personal-best 9:39.60.
Kaytlyn Larson's 4:54.22 in the women's open mile got her fourth place and true freshman Ryan Smeeton picked up fourth in the 3,000-meter run, as well, in 8:17.24.
Multi-athlete Cole Verble set a personal-best in the pole vault of 4.55m/14-11.00 en rout to a 10th place finish in the heptathlon with 4,762 points.
His teammate Donovan Nunley came into the day in eighth overall, but couldn't record a height in the pole vault and ended the meet in 12th with 4,292 points.
Logan Daily set another personal best in the 60-meter dash with his 6.91 that got him third in heat one. Cowboy sophomore Malik Givens just missed out on the final by two hundredths of a second. He ran a 6.81 to take tenth overall and third in heat three.
"After this meet, it probably opens up our eyes and the athletes' eyes that there is still a lot of work to be done," Lockhart said. "This is our first true test of elite competition. We were going against some of the SEC schools that are probably some of the best in the country from arguably the best conference in the country."
After all 16 invitational events were scored, the Cowboys ended the day with 29 points and the Cowgirls had 27.
Up next for OSU is a week off from competition as a team before the busiest weekend of the year that will put four groups of athletes in four different cities, including Fayetteville, Feb. 10-11.
