Track and Field and Cross Country add 15 to 2016 Signing Class
August 03, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State track and field and cross country program has added 15 new members to the 2016 signing class, including four international athletes and six state title winners, the program announced Wednesday.
Five Oklahomans make up the incoming class, including Okemah's Logan Daily, Devre Newby from Woodward, Haley Mouser of Pawhuska, Elliett Kulkin of Jenks and Ramona's Skylar Ward. The quintet has eight state titles among them, with Mouser leading the way, winning back-to-back high jump titles in 2015 and 2016.
Mouser comes to Stillwater from Pawhuska. The former Husky competed in a variety of events while at Pawhuska high school, but she specialized in the high jump where she has won 16 consecutive high school meets dating back to her junior year. With a personal best height of 5 feet 8 inches, Mouser won the Oklahoma Meet of Champions to put a bow on her breakout 2015 season.
On the track, Daily had a near perfect two-year stretch for Okemah high school before committing to becoming a Cowboy. The sprinter swept his way into the Class 2A finals in both the 100-and 200-meter dashes before winning both championships and setting state records in both races with a 10.66 in the 100, and a personal best of 21.62 seconds in the 200.
Though Daily missed out on winning the titles in 2015, he managed to sweep the two races again at the Oklahoma Meet of Champions.
Woodward high school's Newby is another accomplished sprinter and is set to join the up-and-coming Cowgirl squad this fall. Along with winning a state title in basketball and being named to All-State in softball, Newby has blossomed into a talented hurdler and has won two state titles.
On the 5A level, Newby won the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles at the Oklahoma State Championships in 2016. She took the 100-meter hurdle crown with a 15.32-second performance then ran a 45.22 to claim gold in the 300-meter hurdles after running a personal best of 45.12 earlier in the day.
Dual event athlete Ward has had equal success in the shot put and the discus. She won the Class 2A discus title in 2016 and finished runner-up in the shot put as well. The former Caney Valley Trojan will be a welcomed addition to the Cowgirl throwers with the departure of the most decorated Cowgirl thrower in school history, Chase Ealey.
Kulkin will be one of just two pole vaulters on the Cowgirl roster when she joins OSU in the fall. Though the number is scarce, OSU has a storied history with pole vaulters including new Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame member and school record-holder Joe Dial.
Kulkin put together a solid high school career at Jenks, making the 6A state championships in four consecutive seasons and winning the state title in 2014, taking sixth in 2015, but bouncing back and finishing runner-up the following season.
Phoenix native Torrey Hickel won two state titles in the shot put for Desert Vista high school. He took back-to-back shot put titles in 2015 and 2016 in Division I. He was the third-place finisher in the discus his junior year, then finished runner-up to close out his senior campaign. Hickel has a personal best of 183 feet 3 inches in the discus and a 59 foot 5 inch personal best in the shot put, both from this season.
Michaela Vasey from Wheeling, Illinois, threw a personal best 41 feet 5 inches in the shot put in her senior season. She also recorded a discus personal best of 80 feet one inch in 2016. Despite only throwing for the Wildcats for just two years, Vasey has made the Class 3A state championships in the shot put twice.
Garrett Calhoun of Timberline high school becomes the second Idahoan to commit to the Cowboys this year after thrower Zack Andrew committed in the spring. Calhoun, also from Boise, is a dynamic middle-distance runner who has competed at the 200-, 400-, 800-, 1,500-and 1,600-meter distances. He clocked personal bests in the 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter runs this season, crossing the lines in 50.21 seconds, 1:51.70 and 3:58.72, respectively. Calhoun took runner-up in both the 800 and 1,500 in his junior season, and was the runner-up in the 800 again in 2016.
Calhoun will be another welcomed addition to coach Bobby Lockhart's strong middle-distance crew, led by All-Americans Josh Thompson and Tre'Tez Kinnaird.
The Cowboys have had success when it comes to transfer students, like the aforementioned Thompson and Kinnaird, and Hassan Abdi of South Plains Community College looks to keep that success going as he joins the orange and black in 2016.
In his two years at South Plains in Levelland, Texas, Abdi was a key member of the Texans' track and field and cross country teams. He finished fifth at the 2015 NJCAA Cross Country Championships, won two regular season cross country meets and finished ninth at the Cowboy Jamboree. He had a stellar indoor season in 2016 where he earned first-team All-America honors in three individual events. He took sixth in the mile final and was the runner-up in both the 3,000-and 5,000-meter finals. He earned three more All-America honors outdoors where he finished fourth in the 5,000, third in the 1,500 and runner-up in the 10,000 for seven All-America honors in just one complete season.
The Cowboys will welcome a second transfer in decorated junior college All-American Sylvester Barus. The Iowa Western runner earned eight All-America honors during his tenure as a Reiver, with his best finishes coming this past season when he finished second in the 5,000-meter final outdoor and runner-up at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall. Barus made the NJCAA Championships in the mile, 3,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 4X800-meter relay and distance medley relay in his two years at Iowa Western.
Another transfer joining OSU is Chelsea Jarvis from Florida State. A five-time All-ACC honoree, Jarvis adds another athlete to the already loaded field of Cowgirl middle-distance runners including NCAA champion Kaela Edwards and three-time All-American Savannah Camacho.
Jarvis has earned an All-ACC honor in the 800 each time she has competed at the Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She has NCAA competition experience as well, having made the East Preliminary twice while at FSU, and running at the NCAA Indoor Championships three times in the 800, DMR and 4X400-meter relay.
Ryan Smeeton comes to OSU from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He won two Alberta Schools' Athletic Association titles in his final year at Henry Wisewood high school in the 1,500 and 3,000. With personal bests of 8:26 in the 3,000 and 3:53 in the 1,500, Smeeton adds more depth to the talented Cowboy squad.
Kevin Mulcaire of Ireland is the final addition to the Cowboy middle-distance class. Mulcaire dominated the Irish School's Cross Country scene during his four years at St. Flannan's Ennis, winning the championship four consecutive times.
He also set the Irish junior record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:02.30 at the BMX Grand Prix back in 2015. Mulcaire also owns the Irish Schools' record for the outdoor 3,000-meter run, which he took gold in back in 2014. That same season he also won the 1,500, and in 2015 he capped off his decorated high school career with a 5,000-meter title as well.
German international Fenja Krohn will make the move across the Atlantic to join the Cowgirls this fall. She brings her personal best of 5 feet 11.5 inches in the high jump to the OSU jumps program. For perspective, her personal best would be second in school history and would have been good for a podium spot at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships had Krohn been a Cowgirl a season ago.
Krohn is one of two Germans bringing their talents to Stillwater, as middle-distance specialist Ariane Ballner also joins the Cowgirls.
Ballner brings a 2:05.98 to the Pokes' arsenal of 800-meter runners and is an accomplished 1,500-meter runner as well with a personal best time of 4:25.93. She claimed the bronze medal at the German under-23 Championships in the 1,500-meter run in the summer of 2016.
In addition to the 14 signees from the winter signing period, OSU's 2016 recruiting class is 29 strong and a diverse pool of talent with athletes from the sprints, middle and long distances, jumps and throws.
The OSU 2016-17 campaign begins in September with the start of the cross country season. Last year, both teams took home Big 12 and Midwest Regional titles and finished the regular season unbeaten.
