Washington, Ateman Named to Biletnikoff Watch List
July 13, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State wide receivers James Washington and Marcell Ateman were recognized as national award contenders Wednesday morning as they were named to the 2016 Biletnikoff Award Pre-Season Watch List, announced by The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc.
The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the outstanding receiver in college football and any player who catches a pass is eligible for the award, regardless of position.
Washington and Ateman account for two of the 53 players on the watch list, while Oklahoma State is one of just 11 schools in the country that features two players on the list.
Coming off of an outstanding season in 2015, a strong case can be made for Washington as the Big 12's top receiver heading into 2016. As a second-team All-Big 12 selection by both the coaches and the media last year, he is the conference's only returning 1,000-yard receiver and led all returning Big 12 wideouts in yards per game and touchdowns last season. He was a midseason addition to the watch list for the 2015 Biletnikoff Award, and he led the nation with four 70-plus yard receptions. With 1,087 receiving yards, he became one of only four underclassmen ever at OSU to post a 1,000-yard receiving season, joining Rashaun Woods (2001), Dez Bryant (2008) and Justin Blackmon (2010)
Ateman also had a remarkable year last season as he became one of the Cowboys' most explosive big-play threats. He logged 33 catches of at least 10 yards and 11 catches of at least 20 yards, including OSU's longest play of the year on an 82-yard touchdown catch against TCU, which ranks as the seventh longest receiving play in school history. In two of his biggest performances, he helped OSU defeat Iowa State with career highs in catches (8) and receiving yards (132) and made six catches for 101 yards in the Cowboys win over Kansas State, including a key grab on 4th and 8 to keep the Cowboy offense on the field for a game-winning field goal.
The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc., will announce the 10 Biletnikoff Award semifinalists on Nov. 14, 2016, following the vote by the members of the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee. The three finalists will be declared following another vote on Nov. 22, 2016.
The award recipient is selected by the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, made up of a group of college football journalists, commentators and former receivers.
The 2016 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented live on ESPN on Dec. 8, 2016, on The Home Depot College Football Awards. The recipient will be presented his trophy at the Biletnikoff Award Banquet at the University Center Club at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla., on Feb. 18, 2017.
