Track and Field Closes Regular Season at Arkansas
May 06, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma State closed out the outdoor regular season Friday in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the Arkansas Twilight with three more conference top-10 marks and regional qualifying marks just a week ahead of the Big 12 Championships.
The Cowgirls dominated the 800-meter run, producing five of the top-six times, with Savannah Camacho's 2:05.73 leading the pack.
It was Camacho's first open outing since the Stanford Invitational back on April 1 where she opened her season and qualified for the West Regional with her 1,500-meter time of 4:17.56, the 14th fastest in the region.
"It was a great race for Savannah," coach Dave Smith said. "She went out and did what she had to do. She led the race, got her time and ended up dragging Abbie along with her, who's now right in the regional mix herself."
Abbie Hetherington moved up the conference and regional rankings with her runner-up finish in the event in 2:06.26. It puts her in a tie for 16th in the West and a tie for fifth in the conference.
"The biggest story today was Abbie," Smith said. "She pulled up alongside Savannah with about 100 meters to go and ended up running a two-second PR and making herself a real contender in the conference."
All-American Jennifer Celis barely missed out on a top-10 conference time in the 800 with her fourth-place finish, and Molly Sughroue and Kaytlyn Larson took fifth and sixth for the Cowgirls.
Five Cowgirls now hold top-10 spots in the 800-meter run in the Big 12. The Cowgirls are the only team in the conference to own five top-10 places in two events, now with the 800-and 1,500-meter run where OSU holds the five best times in the Big 12.
"We're really middle-distance heavy right now," Smith said. "We have a really great group. All of the women feed off each other, cheer each other on, they train together and get along well. Each week, maybe one or two of them up the ante and the bar keeps getting raised, but they all match it."
Anthoney Armstrong was one of just two entries in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He won the event in 9:05.55 and jumped to seventh in the conference for OSU's third top-10 conference mark of the day and 12th of the year for the Pokes at John McDonnell Field.
"He was basically out there on his own and led from the gun," Smith said. "It's great to see him get back into the mix on the conference level. He undid all of his struggles in one race and nearly qualified for the regional."
The 12 top-10 Big 12 marks for OSU are the most at a venue this outdoor season, edging out the 11 earned at Stanford's Cobb Track.
With the regular season in the rearview mirror, OSU returns to Stillwater to prepare for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships set for May 13-15 at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex in Ft. Worth, Texas. Having won both the Big 12 Cross Country and Indoor titles, the Cowboys have a chance to become the first team in conference history to sweep all three postseason events.
