Cowgirls Fall To Oklahoma
May 14, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
NORMAN—Oklahoma State softball fell to Oklahoma in a pair of games Saturday at Marita Hynes Field.
The Cowgirls (29-24 overall, 6-11 Big 12) fell in the first game of the day 8-0 in a game that was postponed last night in Stillwater in the bottom of the second with Oklahoma State trailing, 5-0.
Oklahoma State fell in the second game of the day, 5-2. Oklahoma took the first meeting in Oklahoma City, 10-2, on Mar. 30.
"There are positives from today, " coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I think you look at any game and there are positives and negatives. The first positive was Shea Coats. Shea was really good today and we giftwrapped five and you can't do that against a program like them. They're just too good."
Oklahoma (47-7, 17-1) got on the board first with two runs in the first to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Sooners followed it with three runs the next inning to take a 5-0 lead after two.
Oklahoma State responded with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 5-2 thanks to freshman Madi Sue Montgomery's RBI single.
After the Oklahoma runs in the first two innings, junior Shea Coats held the Sooners scoreless the next four innings to keep the Cowgirls in the game.
The Sooners held the Cowgirls scoreless the final two innings to hold on for the victory.
Coats (6-2) took the loss for the Cowgirls in six innings of work.
Montgomery led the Cowgirls at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
"The RBI single gave us a lot of momentum that inning," Montgomery said. "We had some good at bats but it just didn't go our way."
The first game, which was postponed at 6:42 p.m. last night in Stillwater due to weather, resumed where the teams left off in the bottom of the second with Oklahoma leading 5-0 today in Norman.
Oklahoma scored three in the fourth inning to secure the 8-0 win and series victory.
Junior Kristin Reasnor and sophomore Maddi Holcomb led the way for the Cowgirls at the plate as the two produced the team's two hits in the game.
Senior Kacy Freeze (16-9) took the loss for the Cowgirls.
"You don't sleep," Gajewski said. "You don't sleep for the next 24 hours and try to convince yourself you've done enough to get into the postseason. Unfortunately we put it in someone else's hands. When you put it in someone else's hands you just don't know. That's the hardest thing, the waiting game. We're going to have a watch party tomorrow. I think they've earned that. We're definitely in the mix. So we'll just sit back and wait and hope we've done enough.

Up Next: The Cowgirls await the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday. The field of 64 for the postseason will be announced tomorrow at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
