TRINITY, Texas — Oklahoma State's Stratton Nolen used a 2-under 70 during his fourth round at the Big 12 Men's Golf Championship on Sunday at Whispering Pines Golf Club to become the 47th conference champion in the history of the Cowboy program.
Nolen finished with a 6-under total of 282 to come in one shot clear of the field and become OSU's first conference medalist since Morgan Hofmann emerged victorious in 2011. The sophomore's victory makes him the fourth different Cowboy to win a tournament this season, joining sophomores Brendon Jelley and Kristoffer Ventura as well as freshman Zach Bauchou.
Additionally, Nolen's win marks the ninth time OSU has produced the Big 12 medalist. He joins Leif Westerberg (1997), Charles Howell (2000), Anders Hultman (2002), Hunter Mahan (2003), Pablo Martin (2007), Rickie Fowler (2008) and Hoffmann (2009, 2011) on OSU's list of Big 12 champions.
Nolen got started quickly during his final round, posting a birdie at the first before carding six consecutive pars. After a bogey at the eighth and a par at the ninth, he turned in even-par 36. Nolen's final bogey of the day came at the 10th. After answering with a birdie at the 11th, he carded birdies at Nos. 14 and 15 to get back into red figures before closing out his round with pars over his final three holes.
In the team race, the Cowboys finished with a 12-over total of 1,164 to finish second after carding a 292 during their final round. Texas closed with a 273 to finish at 14-under 1,138 and atop the leaderboard.
Ventura closed with a 75 to finish at 293 and tied for 12th place.
Senior Jordan Niebrugge finished alone in 15th place at 294 after posting a 76 during his fourth round, while Jelley signed for a 72 to finish at 297 and tied for 19th place.
Junior Wyndham Clark posted a 75 and finished tied for 29th place at 301.
The Cowboys will now await their NCAA regional fate, which will be revealed on May 5 at 8:30 a.m. (CST) on Golf Channel's Morning Drive.
