Cowgirls Finish Undefeated In Big 12 Play
April 24, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
LAWRENCE, Kansas – Oklahoma State's women's tennis team continued to make school history with a 4-0 sweep against No. 33 Kansas inside the Jayhawk Tennis Center on Sunday.
With the victory, the No. 14 Cowgirls (21-4; 9-0 Big 12) wrapped up conference play with an undefeated record for the first time in program history. Three of the last four Cowgirl wins have been shutouts.
OSU extended its win streak to 10 matches with Sunday's match against the Jayhawks. The Cowgirls outscored opponents 36-5 in nine conference matches this season.
"Going through this conference, as tough as it is, is impressive," coach Chris Young said. "I think our league is getting stronger every year and we have six teams that will make the [NCAA] tournament, so I'm very proud of the girls for accomplishing an undefeated season."
Due to an injury forfeit, which left Kansas with only five healthy players, the Cowgirls only needed to win one of two doubles matches to secure the first point of the match. Kansas pushed the Cowgirls in one of the tighter doubles points of the season.
Maria Jose Cardona and Anastasiya Rychagova defeated Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari, 6-3 to even the doubles portion of play.
The point came down to No. 1 doubles between the Jayhawks and Cowgirls. After losing two of the first three sets, Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente battled back to take a 4-3 advantage Nina Khmelnitckaia and Janet Koch. The Cowgirl seniors would take the next two games to secure a 6-3 victory.
"I thought Kansas came out and played extremely hard, but our girls won big points and closed out tough first sets," Young said. "That's the great thing about our team, throughout this Big 12 regular season we've taken every team's best shot and we've been able to close out difficult sets and play the big points well."
The Cowgirls entered singles with a 2-0 lead over the Jayhawks because of the injury forfeit.
Vladica Babic got her first action of the day in singles at the No. 2 position. The sophomore from Podgorica, Montenegro found herself down 4-3 in the first set against Smith Hinton. Babic responded by taking the next three games for a 6-4 victory in the first set. The Cowgirl managed to break a 4-4 deadlock against Hinton by taking two-straight games for another 6-4 victory.
Lushkova found herself down 3-0 during the first set of her singles match against Janet Koch, before being able to close the gap to tie the score at five. The All-American pulled away in a tiebreaker to win the first set. In the second set, Lushkova did not give Koch a chance to keep the match close, as she put the Jayhawk away, 6-3.
The Cowgirls will return home and begin preparing for the Big 12 Championship, which will be held at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center from April 28-May 1.
"For us to host the Big 12 Tournament for the first time in the history of Oklahoma State Tennis is very exciting, so there's a responsibility that comes with that for us to be prepared and play well," Young said.
