March 05, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State's women's tennis team recorded its third-straight victory against No. 72 Oklahoma in the Bedlam series with a 5-2 win at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center on Saturday.
"Anytime we play Oklahoma, it's a rivalry, there's different emotions that are involved," coach Chris Young said. "We knew it was going to be a close match and I'm glad our girls were able to fight through and in key situations step up and play big points."
The Cowgirls are winners of five of the last six meetings against the Sooners, including a series sweep last season. The Cowgirls have outscored the Sooners, 14-2, in the last three matches.
OSU (11-3; 0-0 Big 12) continues to own one of the top doubles lineups in the country, as the Cowgirls have yet to lose a doubles point this season.
Kelsey Laurente and Maria Alvarez clinched the doubles point for OSU with a defeat of Simran Sethi and Lily Miyazaki. The senior duo put the Cowgirls up 1-0 with a win on court one, 6-3.
Carla Tur Mari and Viktoriya Lushkova came out of the gates firing by recording a 6-3 defeat of Emma Devine and Mimi Fotopoulos on court two.
Alvarez also clinched the victory for the Cowgirls in singles play at the No. 6 position. The Cowgirl senior defeated Malene Stripp in a straight-set victory, 7-6 (2), 6-4.
"It's always a great feeling to beat [Oklahoma] at home," Alvarez said.
Lushkova was honored prior to singles play for being the second Cowgirl to win All-American honors twice in a career.
The junior cruised past Christina Brigante in straight sets on court three, 6-1, 6-2, to put the Cowgirls up 2-0.
After being down 6-5 in the first set, Adamovic reeled off wins in eight-straight games against No. 78 Miyazaki, 7-6 (2), 6-0, giving the Cowgirls a commanding 3-0 lead.
"It's always great to beat Oklahoma and to do it three times in a row is amazing," Adamovic said.
Katarina Stresnakova gave the Cowgirls the fifth and final point of the day on court five. The Cowgirl freshman outlasted Sethi, 7-5, 7-6 (6).
The Sooners picked up wins in two singles matches. Court four needed three sets to decide a winner. After splitting both of the first two sets, 6-4, Laurente fell against Fotopoulos in the final set, 2-1 (11-9).
On court two, Devine defeated Vladica Babic, 7-5, 6-4.
The Cowgirls return to action on March 16 as they travel to take on USC in Los Angeles.
