Cowgirls Fall In Bedlam
March 30, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma City, Okla. ---- Oklahoma State softball fell to Oklahoma 10-2 in a five-inning rule run on Wednesday night at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Cowgirls started the game as well as they could have hoped, but three Oklahoma home runs in the fifth inning to bring home five runs sealed the win for the Sooners.
"I'll tell you the truth," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I though Brandi (Needham) was sharp. Maybe the best I've seen her all year. She made one bad pitch. Really I could go back and say, 'maybe I shouldn't have taken her out.' But I just felt like, it was 5-2 and they had some momentum there. I thought let's get Kacy (Freeze) in there. She's never pitched there, and they hit two balls on her and they were home runs."
Although the score would tell otherwise, Oklahoma State kept things close with the Sooners from the start. A Berkley Faulkner solo home run over the left field fence gave the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead after two innings.
The Cowgirls didn't wait long to score again, as a Tiffany Mikkelson's sacrifice fly out to right field brought home Vanessa Shippy to give them a 2-0 lead after three.
Oklahoma went on to score 10-unanswered runs, with eight of them coming off long balls as the Sooners were held in check for most of the night outside of the three home runs.
Oklahoma State had a couple of notable streaks continue at the plate. Shippy continued her streak of reaching base safely to 26 games, while Taylor Lynch extended her team season-high hit streak to 13 games. Â
"I've been seeing the ball really well the past couple of games," Shippy said. "Which is exciting. I saw a lot of fight in our team. That's what I'm going to focus on. My team fought, and we were in that game. We had a tough inning but you're going to have those. We're going to learn from it. That's what's super cool. You learn from a loss. I'm super proud of the way the team fought."
Shippy said the loss is in the past now, and the Cowgirls will look to move forward with conference play this weekend.
"Starting with a loss, there is nowhere to go but up," She said. "That's exciting. This loss is tough but we're going to learn from it. We're going to learn from it and be able to challenge (Texas
Tech)."
