Oklahoma State To Face Colorado In Valero Alamo Bowl
December 04, 2016 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State will face Colorado in the 2016 Valero Alamo Bowl, it was announced today. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Central Time on Thursday, Dec. 29 in San Antonio's Alamodome.
This marks the fourth appearance for OSU in the Alamo Bowl. The Cowboys appeared in the game as recently as 2010, when they were 36-10 winners over Arizona. OSU's two previous showings resulted in a 33-20 loss to Purdue in 1997 and a 33-7 setback against Ohio State in 2004.
"In addition to being home to a significant number of Oklahoma State graduates and a fertile recruiting area for us, the city of San Antonio is the site of many good memories for OSU fans, and as history has shown, the Alamo Bowl is a great bowl to participate in," Oklahoma State Athletic Director Mike Holder said. "We're happy to return for what promises to be exciting matchup between two top-15 teams. We have a long history with Colorado and have a great deal of respect for the people there."
Both Oklahoma State and Colorado played for conference championships last week. The Cowboys (9-3 overall; 7-2 Big 12) enter the bowl season having won seven of their last eight games and ranking among the Big 12's best teams in terms of passing offense, turnovers gained, kickoff coverage and punt coverage.
Champions of the Pac-12 South division, Colorado (10-3 overall; 8-1 Pac-12) enters bowl season having won six of its last seven games, with the lone loss coming to Washington in the conference championship game. What coach Mike MacIntyre has done in Boulder is remarkable, given that the Buffs were 14-48 in the five seasons previous to this year. He was honored as the 2016 Pac-12 Coach of the Year and is a favorite to earn national coach of the year recognition. Earlier this season, CU picked up quality wins at Stanford and at home against Washington State and Utah.
The series between Oklahoma State and Colorado is a long one that dates back to 1920. The two teams played every year as members of the Big Eight Conference and that extended into the Big 12 era. The 2016 Valero Bowl provides the setting for the first meeting between the two teams since Colorado moved to the Pac-12 in 2011. The Buffaloes lead the all-time series, 26-19-1, but Oklahoma State has won three of the last four, including a 31-28 victory in 2009 when the two teams last met. The lone neutral-site meeting between the two teams was the first meeting between the two teams, played in Oklahoma City in 1920. Colorado was a 40-7 winner that day.
