Michalicka Joins Cowboy Tennis Coaching Staff
November 11, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State men's tennis coach Jay Udwadia has announced the addition of Marek Michalicka as an assistant on his coaching staff.
"I think there is no better place to start my coaching career than here at OSU," Michalicka said. "I am excited to work with Jay Udwadia, who is one of the most successful coaches in college tennis and I hope to learn a lot from him."
The Rícany, Czech Republic native spent the past five years competing professionally, earning 11 ITF Futures singles titles in that time as well as winning the Czech National Indoor Tennis Championship this year. Michalicka's professional success has earned him a spot in the ATP World Tour Rankings, where he currently sits at No. 339 in the world.
"I'm thrilled to have Marek join our Cowboy family," Udwadia said. "He is a great person who will be an excellent addition to our program and our university as a whole. His professional playing experience and recruiting contacts around the world will help our team tremendously."
Michalicka (pronounced Mee-sha-lee-ka) has won more than 250 professional matches across the ITA Futures and Challenger Tour and been ranked as high as No. 235 in the world by the ATP. Prior to competing across the globe, Michalicka attended the University of Wisconsin, where he compiled 97 victories in singles action and another 86 in doubles play. His 97-35 singles record gave him the second-highest winning percentage in Wisconsin history at the time.
Michalicka was a force on the court from the time he stepped on campus in Madison. As a freshman in the 2007-08 season, he put together an impressive 23-2 record in singles play, primarily playing at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. His junior campaign proved to be his most successful as a Badger as he compiled 29 singles wins, one of which came in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship, making him the first UW player since 1991 to advance out of the tournament's first round.
The right-hander became one of the most decorated Badgers of all time as he was a three-time All-Big Ten selection, a three-time participant in the NCAA Singles Championship and was voted UW's Most Valuable Player during his senior campaign. He graduated from the university in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in economics.
After a successful collegiate career and years of experience on the professional circuit, Michalicka will join an OSU team that is coming off one of its best seasons in recent memory as the Cowboys compiled 20 wins and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008.
"I am honored to join the OSU family," Michalicka said. "My hope is to help the Cowboys become the next powerhouse of collegiate tennis."
