AUSTIN, Texas - Ben Grogan's 40-yard field goal with six seconds left helped Oklahoma State cap off a late comeback and defeat Texas, 30-27, on Saturday at Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
After rushing out to an early 14-3 advantage, the Cowboys (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) overcame a pair of second half turnovers to hold off the Longhorns and become the first team to beat Texas four-consecutive times at Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Despite trailing through a majority of the first half, Texas (1-3, 0-1 Big 12) stormed back to take its first lead of the game on Tyrone Swoopes' seven-yard run with just over five minutes left in the second quarter.
From there on, the two squads swapped leads three times over the final two quarters, beginning with J.W. Walsh's touchdown toss to Jeremy Seaton early in the third. As the quarter came to a close, Texas answered when cornerback Holton Hill picked off a misplaced throw from OSU quarterback Mason Rudolph and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown, putting the Longhorns on top, 27-24.
The Cowboys capitalized on a series of UT penalties late in the fourth, and used the second of Grogan's three field goals to tie contest, 27-27, with 1:33 left on the clock.
After holding the Longhorns to a three-and-out, Texas punter Michael Dickson fumbled the snap on a punt attempt and was forced into a off-balance kick that traveled only ten yards, giving Oklahoma State favorable field position for Grogan's game-winning field goal.
Outside of two interceptions and a fumble, Rudolph led the Cowboys offensively, throwing for 290 yards on 22-of-34 passing. Texas quarterback Jerrod Heard overcame seven sacks and only 48 yards from the Texas offense in the second half to finish with over 100 yards in both the passing and rushing categories.
Oklahoma State will look to maintain its unbeaten record next weekend, as the Cowboys host Kansas State on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Boone Pickens Stadium.
