Gundy Places Three Cowboy Walk-Ons on Scholarship
August 04, 2015 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy announced Tuesday that walk-on players Blake Jarwin, Brad Lundblade and Chad Whitener have been placed on scholarship beginning with the 2015-2016 academic year.
"It's one of the greatest joys as a coach to get to reward guys for their hard work and dedication," Gundy said. "We've had a long tradition here at Oklahoma State of a great walk-on program. We've had guys put their heart and souls into this program and it's always great when you can put them on scholarship. Blake has been in our program and has taken all the proper steps to earn a scholarship. Chad transferred here and earned the right to a scholarship. Lundblade was able to contribute right away as a true freshman. When a young man comes in and plays like Lundblade, we are happy to give him that scholarship."
All three Cowboys have been a part of the OSU football program for multiple years and made significant contributions to the team.
Jarwin, a junior tight end from Tuttle, Okla., played in every game last season and started against West Virginia and Baylor. He caught five passes for 107 yards on the year, highlighted by a 47-yard touchdown reception versus Texas Tech. He also caught two passes for 29 yards against Texas, one for 17 against UTSA and one for 14 in the Cactus Bowl win over Washington. He logged six kick returns on short kickoffs and totaled 66 return yards.
Lundblade walked on to the Cowboy football team as a late addition last season. He played significant reps at center as a true freshman in the last seven games and earned a start at Baylor. Originally from Argyle, Texas, Lundbalde was a valuable member of the Cowboy line in the second half of the season last year and looks to be a valuable asset this season.
Whitener is a sophomore linebacker who redshirted last year after transferring from California. Although he did not see the field last season, the Mansfield, Texas, native was an important practice player and looks to play a significant role for the defense in his first year of eligibility as a Cowboy.
Placing these three players on scholarship continues a long-standing tradition of Coach Gundy honoring walk-ons at Oklahoma State.
In his decade at the helm of the Cowboy football program, Gundy has also earned a reputation for making the most of the OSU walk-on program. With a walk-on wall dedicated to their recognition in the OSU football facilities, numerous walk-ons awarded scholarships and sending multiple walk-ons to the NFL, Gundy has established and maintained one of the most effective walk-on programs in the country.
