Niebrugge Earns Low Amateur At The Open

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — Oklahoma State rising senior Jordan Niebrugge fired a 70 on Monday at St. Andrews to tie for sixth place and finish as the low amateur at The Open Championship.

Niebrugge's 2-under score tied him with Danny Willett, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia at 11-under 277. Zach Johnson won the event in a playoff after posting a 273 total.

In addition to claiming The Open's silver medal, Niebrugge's finish secured a return to next year's Open at Royal Troon.

During his final round, Niebrugge opened with three consecutive pars before reeling off three birdies in a row. He eventually turned in 3-under 33. After carding his final birdie of the day at the 14^th, he closed with bogeys at the 15^th and 17^th and pars at the 16^th and 18^th.

With his finish, Niebrugge also became the first amateur to finish in the top 10 at an Open Championship at St. Andrews since 1960 and is the first Cowboy to claim low amateur honors at the event since Danny Edwards in 1973.
